The celebration of Halloween comes from the Pagan festival of Samhain ( pronounced sow'in ) celebrating those who have gone before, the physically dead friends, family and/or ancestors of those celebrating. The word "Pagan" comes from the Latin word "Pagani" meaning country people, those who live in the country. Pagans, mostly being farmers, were very close to the earth and celebrated holidays having to do with the seasonal changes they observed. i.e. a time for planting, a time for harvest, etc. They were often witches and celebrated with various rituals. The word "Witch" meant "wise" as in "Water Witch" meaning a dowser and "Green Witch" meaning a herbalist, etc. The practice of a lit pumpkin or gourd, was formed in Ireland to keep away mischievous spirits on this night when the veil between the physical and spiritual worlds was at its thinnest. In Ireland food is often left out for the 'little' people. A great practice on Halloween is to tell favorite stories of departed friends and family.
You can read more about this festival on the 3rd page of Free Ghosts.
